Nichrome and fuses melting at 1800x magnification – video

Recently I was asked by Joyalens to review their JL246MS digital microscope. I accepted in order to look at Nichrome and fuses up close. (Note I don’t receive any commissions for sales). Interestingly this microscope is USB 5v powered, so it’s easy to run even off of a battery pack if needed.

Nichrome wire forms an oxide layer on the outside when it heats up. In theory this protects it over the long term. Under the microscope one can see the oxide layer. When the wire burns out, the layer of oxide is clearly visible while the wire inside is a silver color.

Another interest I had was watching a fuse vaporize in real time. Unfortunately this is hard to catch on camera. It was possible at 120fps 720p to see the fuse wire burning out, as well as a small arc.

All these experiments were powered using my 1200w solar panel array outside, so DC voltage.

Overall I found this microscope useful even though I don’t have a lot of experience using them. It wasn’t hard to put together and set up. High magnification work can be tedious but I was still able to get decent images and video. Although the microscope can produce 2K and 4K MP4 video, I tended to use 1080p/60 and 720p/120 for this type of work.
